Google Chrome

Google’s Chrome browser was released Tuesday September 2nd. I did not see any mention of the new browser on any technical articles anywhere. Then on Tuesday I was reading Twitter.com posts and read a few posts that there were rumors that Google came out with their new browser. So naturally I went to Google and looked for it. I could not find any reference to it. Then a few hours later I the download link was made available. So I immediately downloaded it.

My first impressions of Google Chrome were that it seemed clean and fast. I then I noticed the tabs across the top which make it a lot easier for Tab toggling. The feature I like the most is when you start the browser the initial page shows you the sites you visit most often. This feature is very convenient. I did not see any plugin capabilities or integration with sites like Logmein.com that use Microsoft .NET technologies.  At this time there is no Mac OSX version either. Overall I think this browser is nice but I will stick with Internet Explorer.

One thing I would like to point out is people from Twitter.com and various tech journals initially described Google Chrome. People were using words Browser War, Microsoft Killer and Firefox Competitor. Since 98% of the worlds computers use Microsoft Windows which ships with Internet Explorer what War are they talking about? How is this going to be a Microsoft Internet Explorer Killer? Channel Web Reports “Open source enthusiasts and Firefox advocates might be worried that Google’s Chrome seems to be taking the biggest bite out of Firefox’s market share.” All these statements are so ridiculous. Firefox is an open source software browser with hundreds of convenient plugins that run on all kinds of operating system platforms. Statements from the one above act like the Firefox project should get ready to shutdown because Google is on the scene. Then there is the Microsoft factor. TechCrunch.com has an article called Meet Chrome, Google’s Windows Killer. Man how ridiculous of a title is that? Microsoft actually makes money from their operating systems and business software. Microsoft is the standard computing platform for the world. The majority of web based applications that have been developed where developed with Microsoft technologies because that is default browser on 98% of all Windows computers. How do the various tech publications know what browser people use on a day to day basis? Usually the more technical people use Firefox and the rest of use Internet Explorer. For the most part your average user is more interested in the web content than in the browser they are using.  I believe the tech writers making over the top statements regarding Google Chrome are overzealous Microsoft haters. These tech writers should just report the facts and leave the opinions to the readers. Overall though I think it is good to have additional web browser options because it helps fuel innovation.
